Guidelines for the BiPolar Bears of Phoenix





  1. The BiPolar Bears of Phoenix (DBSA) is a Support and Information group for consumers experiencing BiPolar Disorder. Consumers experiencing Chronic Depression are also welcome.

  2. "Supportive Others" are welcome to attend and participate, as long as they do not detract from our service to consumers. Referrals of "Supportive Others" to AAMI and other support groups for families is frequently made.

  3. Non-related individuals are permitted to attend with the consent of the consumers present, and may contribute, but must not overwhelm consumers with verbal or nonverbal comments.

  4. "Mental Health Professionals" must receive a consensus of other members in attendance to stay .

  5. We believe that BiPolar Disorder is primarily a medical problem due to brain chemistry (and frequently has a genetic predisposition).

  6. We are proud of our location in Central Phoenix, both to serve consumers in the immediate area, and to be accessible from all locations in the Metro area.

  7. We encourage referrals to our group, and are very sensitive to consumers with newly diagnosed mood disorders.

  8. We are gratified by the depth and experience shared by regular members of our group.

  9. There are no dues requirements for this support group.

  10. The group sees its primary goal as a issues, discussion, and support group. Guest speakers, social events, and extended activities may be scheduled, as appropriate.

  11. Individuals who are disruptive to members of the group, will be handled by the group leader.

  12. Crosstalk is very disruptive to other members of the group, and will be discouraged by the group leader.

  13. We encourage all consumers to attend other support groups to discover which group(s) may be best for them. We accept that this concept may result in irregular attendance each week.

  14. Consumers with professional backgrounds and consumers with current or former highly functional abilities are encouraged to attend.

  15. Membership is defined as consumers who have attended 2 meetings in the past 4 or 4 meetings in the last 8.

  16. Identifiable individual issues and the identity of members is strictly confidential. Note our Privacy Policy,

  17. Demographic information is collected for United Way and other statistical purposes. Individuals are not identified name, street address, or individual personal characteristics.

  18. Upon consent of the individual, support group contact lists may be distributed to the group periodically, and may include basic contact information. Further distribution of these names is strictly prohibited.



The BiPolar Bears of Phoenix is affiliated with the Mental Health Association of Arizona, A United Way Primary Partner Agency, and the Depression and Bipolar Alliance (DBSA).
